Transferring Files - Computer to
Phone
For Most Modern Motorola Cell Phones
| 1.
First determine what equipment you need for your particular phone.
All of these provide different ways to access both your phones internal
memory, and/or add in memory cards. |

Two Different Memory
Locations |
| |
|
|
If your phone takes a memory card (not the same as a SIM card), then you
will have two memory locations: 1. Internal memory - this comes
built into the phone, and 2. Memory card - usually purchased
separately. Each of these can be accessed in different ways.
While some newer Motorola phones,
like the V3xx, allow ring tones to be accessed from a memory card, most
demand that the file be stored in the phone's internal memory.
You'll learn how to access both locations below, but the instructions will
be geared towards getting the ring tone to internal memory.
Mini USB cables and Data cables
- can only access the memory card when used by themselves. They
can access both memory locations when used with the Phone Tools
software. Ring tones are located in the phones internal
memory. You cannot directly access internal memory with a USB cable
alone. You'll need the Phone Tools software to help.
However, you can transfer files to the memory card with just the USB
cable, and then move or copy them to the phones internal memory using the
phones own built in software, thus avoiding the purchase of the Phone
Tools software.
Bluetooth Dongle -
can access both memory card and internal memory. Comes with it's own
software.

USING A MINI USB OR DATA CABLE W/O PHONE TOOLS SOFTWARE:
When you first plug in your phone that has a memory card to your PC via
USB cable, if you are using Windows 2000 or XP/Vista, your PC will see the
memory card, assign it a drive letter and call it a "Removable Disc".
If you have used a USB thumb drive, it works the same way. You can then easily transfer files to the memory card by copying and
pasting using the My Computer file interface on your PC.
For transferring a ring tone this
way:
1. Copy the ring tone file to the "audio" folder
on the memory card.
2. Disconnect the phone from the PC.
3. On your phone, go to Menu/My Stuff/Sounds.
4. Find the ring tone, highlight it, then click the MENU button.
5. You'll be given a list of commands, which should include Copy.
6. Choose Copy and hit Select.
7. It will give you a choice of where to copy to. Choose
"Phone" and hit Select. If "Phone" does not appear as one of the
choices, turn your phone off, and on, and try again. When
"Phone" appears as a choice to copy to, hit the Select key. It will
automatically copy the ring tone to the appropriate folder, "audio", on
your phone where the ring tones are stored.
8. Menu/Settings/Audio/Detail/Calls - select your new ring tone.
USING A
MINI USB OR DATA CABLE WITH PHONE TOOLS SOFTWARE:
Motorola Phone Tools has features that allow you to
create ring tones, edit and back up your phone book, and sync it with your
Outlook contacts and calendar, and many other options in addition to
transferring files. While the suggested retail is $40.00, it rarely sells at
that price, and you can usually find it for $10.00 or less at Amazon and
other locations. If you make extensive use of these other phone
features, it's a good investment. |

|
1. Follow the
instructions carefully for installing the Phone Tools software.
2. Start Phone Tools.
3. Connect phone and PC with the mini USB cable.
4. The Phone Tools software will communicate with your phone,
and determine what model it is. This process may work
automatically, or it may walk you though a connection wizard where you may
have to tell it that you are connecting with USB. Then it will display a
picture of your phone as part of the initial user interface to access the
software. If your phone is not recognized, you may need to update
the Phone Tools Software. There should be an entry in
Start/Programs/Motorola Phone Tools for live update.
5. It will then continue to read the info on your phone -
"initializing, please wait" will scroll across the screen (this may take a
minute), - and when its done, you will see something similar to the
picture on the right, except it will be of your phone.

5.
Click on Multimedia Studio to access the file transfer utility.
6. Click on the File Transfer Studio link, and a double window
interface will appear with your PCs files (My Computer) on the left
and your cell phones files (Mobile Phone) on the right. (If you see
a folder on the phone side called MMC(Removable), that's where your
removable memory cards files are stored.)
7. Browse to the folder on your PC where you saved the ring tone.
8. Once you can see the file, highlight it (single click), then move
to the Mobil Phone side of the display and double click the "audio" folder
to open it. This is where the ring tones are stored.

 |
| |
|
9.
Click the button between the two windows with the arrow pointing to the
right ,
and the ring tone file will be copied to the phone.
10. Now when you go to Menu/Settings/Audio/Detail/Calls, that mp3
should be an the list. |

USING A
BLUETOOTH ADAPTER TO TRANSFER FILES:
USB Wireless Bluetooth adapters for your PC can vary in
price from less than $10.00 to about $30.00. Some of the features
that vary, and not always by price, are range, operating systems
supported, transfer rate, and Bluetooth standard. You should be able
to find one in the teens that is suitable. Since this form of file
transfer tends to be slower than USB cable, look for the faster transfer
speeds if you are going to be using one frequently.
1. Install the software that
comes with the adapter.
2. Plug in the adapter.
3. On your phone, Menu/Settings/Connection, highlight Bluetooth and
hit Select.
4. Choose Setup, and for Name you can type in your name or your
phones model #.
5. Turn the Power on, highlight Find Me and hit Select.
6. Start the Bluetooth software on your PC.
7. Depending on the type of Bluetooth software used, when it finds
your phone, a new folder should appear on the screen of your PC. It may use
your phones model number in its name. Inside that folder will be
your cell phones folders.
8. Open the "audio" folder. Then open My Computer,
browse to where you saved your MP3 ring tone, and copy and paste it to the
"audio" folder on your phone.
9. On your phone, Menu/Settings/Audio/Detail/Calls. Choose
your new ring tone. |
